You can regard mitochondria as the batteries inside your cells and adenosine triphosphate or ATP as the chemical that powers those batteries. The more mitochondria you have in your cells the better, the more ATP inside your mitochondria the better. Mitochondrial decline is related to most (if not all) age related diseases including obesity, so keeping those little battery packs working in their optimal state is extremely important. But what does this mean for melatonin?

Melatonin holds a unique power to fight mitochondrial dysfunction. Scientists found that a cause of mitochondrial dysfunction was a hole that appears on the inner membrane of the mitochondria which decreases their capacity to generate energy. Until very recently there were no wonder drugs (prescription or over the counter) available that had been known to plug this little hole, but a landmark study published in the Journal of Biochemistry and Biophysics in 2017 shows melatonin assists with maintaining the levels of an enzyme which plugs this hole. Worth noting that the hole is actually known as the “mitochondrial permeability transition pore”

Melatonin has been shown to be a great anticancer supplement. Females that had metastatic breast cancer and had stopped responding to tamoxifen showed an improved response to chemotherapy when given 20mg of melatonin in the evenings. Prostate cancer cells showed a profound slowdown in replication when given melatonin; note that this was only in the lab, though promising results none the less. It was also shown that across all types of cancer that melatonin reduced the risk of death by a whopping 34% (Mills, et al, 2005).

Migraines are also a victim of melatonin. A study shows that when supplementing with 3mg’s of melatonin half an hour before bedtime, sufferers showed a 50% drop in the number of migraines per month. Not bad considering most expensive migraine drugs from the pharmacy cannot perform as well as this naturally occurring hormone (see Peres et al below for more).
